• WSCUC Opens Path for Reduced-Credit Programs

    December 17, 2024 - WSCUC

As demand for more affordable and efficient degree pathways grows, WSCUC has opened its substantive change process for member institutions to propose condensed program designs, sometimes referred to as reduced-credit or three-year programs, requiring fewer credits than traditional models. Well-designed reduced-credit programs provide an accelerated pathway to a degree and align with WSCUC’s commitment to championing institutional innovation and positive student outcomes.

Condensed degree programs require fewer than the standard 120 credits for a bachelor’s degree. National discourse on the value and cost of college, rising student debt, and the return on investment of a degree has amplified interest in reduced-credit programs. By streamlining the time to completion, reduced-credit programs have the potential to make college more accessible, reduce student debt, and enable students to enter the workforce or pursue advanced degrees sooner than traditional four-year degrees.

Proposals for reduced-credit programs will be evaluated by WSCUC’s Substantive Change process as offerings at a new degree level, even if the institution already offers a program in the same field under a 120-credit structure. Proposals will undergo peer review by a panel that may elect to conduct a site visit as part of its evaluation.

Detailed guidance on proposal requirements for reduced-credit programs is available in WSCUC’s online resource library.
